fli council
The FLI (first-generation and low-income student) Council is a student organization whose purpose is to “ignite transformational change through resources, accountability, and a collective voice”
The organization emerged from within SGO, before eventually branching off into their own student group. However, the FLI Council and SGO both worked closely together in order to enact change for FLI students. FLI Council was officially charted on March 20, 2020. The organization emerged from a Student Government committee. The biggest initiatives that FLI Council can be held responsible for are
- The FLI Food Pantry, that is currently still run by the FLI council who independently makes orders, receives orders, and organizes the pantry.
- The SEPTA Initiative, that previously provided SEPTA passes on a bi-weekly or monthly basis for FLI students to venture into Philadelphia. As of the 2023-2024 school year, the initiative was disbanded due to Swarthmore partnering with SEPTA for the “Key Advantage UPass” program.
- The Driving School Program that allows FLI students to learn how to drive and receive their license at no expense to them.
- The Winter/Spring Care Packages which has in the past distributed umbrellas, blankets, and sweatshirts for low-income students.
- The FLI Endowment which was an unsuccessful attempt to institutionalize support for FLI students.
- FLI-POP, a pilot pre-orientation program for the 2023-2024 school year developed in partnership with the Teaching and Learning Commons (TLC).
